Sometimes it almost hurts to loan a detector to someone.

I've been hunting a double lot where they demolished a couple of structures and the owner plans to build two homes there. He gave me the 'OK' and said that a worker also had a metal detector. I spoke with him and he's using a Bounty Hunter Fast Trackers he got at a yard sale for $25. I've been there a couple of times last week, and returned yesterday since they were not working and I didn't have to dodge the back-hoe and other activity.

The worker is staying in a travel trailer next to the lots and has seen the detectors I have been using (Vanquish 540, Impact, FORS CoRe, etc.) and yesterday he stopped by to see if I'd found anything. I mentioned I had a couple of detectors I am selling, and told him when I returned from the ghost town adventure yesterday I'd grab my 'loaner-unit' for him to check out. It's the same as a brand new model I have in the box, a Fisher F44. I have the 7" Concentric coil on my unit.

I had just worked towards an area I wanted to hunt when he came over on my return and I got the F44 out to demonstrate the modes, my Custom mode, the features and how to use it. That took maybe 4 or 5 minutes. I had leaned my 540 on my vehicle and it was still on which was causing some EMI, so I handed him the detector, reminded him to not sweep too fast and just work it slowly and methodically, and since there was EMI I said I would walk over to another area to reduce the interference.

He started detecting there where we were and moved a bit the direction I was heading as he knew he had removed a tree stump from there. In less than five minutes I heard him holler out ... "I found a silver Quarter."

And he did, and it even still had a decent readable date on that 1925 Standing Liberty. Even still good detail on the wings on the reverse. I haven't found a Standing Liberty Quarter in that unworn condition since '07.

The site is quite littered and we continued on detecting, with neither of us finding another coin for maybe a half hour of hunting. The good news is he was rather excited after making that find, and when he gets paid in a week or so he might be buying his own F-44. Working for the fellow who buys old properties for him to work at and clear the land, I am certain he's going to have a good year of new sites to hunt.

You just never know when a search coil is going to be worked over a desirable target .... but hope that when it is, your hand is at the control.smiling smiley

You never know who will run the coil over something.

A really good story, Mike. I enjoyed that. Still have the Inca? N/T

Yes, the Inca was, and still can be a Relic Hunter.
