I always read the manual, then bench test. Go hunt. Read the manual again, things mentioned in the manual make more sense. Go hunt, read again..............................after awhile things will click.
Now I will admit owning a number of Clive's books pertaining to a particular detector(s), helps you realize there's even more to learn. His books reveal more tips on operation not found in the manual and he goes into finer details. Read them cover to cover a number of times to let everything sink in.....I only plug his books because they really do help make someone a better detectorist. [

Oh yeah, Monte is a treasure trove of information, worth reading his posts. Always learning some thing new from him.
