Good point(s) SvenS.-----There really is no substitute for experience in the field but these other things mentioned lead up to it.-----I'm blessed to have a wife that loves to metal detect as much as I do & we both go on hunts with the idea of learning something new if possible on each hunt.-----What we do is after a hunt we will usually set down together & talk the hunt over (taking in each others input) as to detector operation, hunt condition, etc., etc.-----A lot of times I will ask her (or she will ask me)--How did that thing (detector/coil) hunt out here on this site?--Tell me EVERYTHING--don't spare me nuthin! smiling smiley---We learn a lot at times by doing that--Nobodys got all the answers & that's where a lot of the fun comes in on this great hobby--it's a never ending learning experience.-----True, the finds don't come as easily or in the numbers as in the "old days"--but it's the challenge these days that still make this hobby a lot of fun.------Del

I always read the manual, then bench test. Go hunt. Read the manual again, things mentioned in the manual make more sense. Go hunt, read again..............................after awhile things will click.

Now I will admit owning a number of Clive's books pertaining to a particular detector(s), helps you realize there's even more to learn. His books reveal more tips on operation not found in the manual and he goes into finer details. Read them cover to cover a number of times to let everything sink in.....I only plug his books because they really do help make someone a better detectorist. [www.clivesgoldpage.com]

Between the owners manual, his books and actual hunting experience putting what you have learned into use results in more treasure.

Oh yeah, Monte is a treasure trove of information, worth reading his posts. Always learning some thing new from him.
