Re: HEADPHONES: Who uses them, and who doesn't?

April 23, 2020 07:03PM
I use head phones almost exclusively when detecting as I am predominantly in public spaces, that is unless they are some wireless models and I cannot pair themthinking Yes, embarrassing I know but it has happened to me.
I still look forward to ghost town detecting and when that happens my ears may see what detector speakers work like for me smiling smiley
A number of my headphones are Detector Pro models collected over the years, (Grey Ghost NDT, Black Widows, Nugget Busters), all of which are holding up without issue and working like the day I bought them.
I still have a couple pair of the Sunray Pro headphones, both the regular model as well as their “Pro gold” model in my collection; I may be mistaken but they sure look like Killer Bee phones.....
I have also acquired some small production custom phones from the UK, Mal’s Super Blues for CTX3030 & Equinox, and his splash proof/brief immersion wading phones specifically for the CTX3030, Mal’s phones can generate some serious levels of volume and he has this caveat on his site, use with care.
I also bought a pair of fully submersible phones made by Tony Eisehwower in USA for the Equinox machines, nice work Tony!
While writing this it got me wondering so I went to actually look at my headphones in “the crypt” and I see I still have a pair of the blue RatPhones hanging on my wall, if my memory isn’t playing tricks on me these were my perfect match to my Omega 8000 when I had one as the cord is in the left side cup which pairs nicely with the jack on the Omega. Monte will correct me if I’m wrong I’m sure.
Early on I had some Depth Master Super phones when I was still using a Garrett GTI2500; The Depth Master phones had much superior sound and an amplifier feature and as compared to the stock Garrett phones, (Calrads?). The stock Garrett phones that came with the GTI sounded very, for want of a better word, “muddy” sounding, blurry, muted, at least to my ears. N.B. I still have several pairs of manufacturer included package headphones gathering dust in my detector cave...
I have some XP units, Deus and GoldMaxx Power, which have really good audio quality OEM wireless headphones, and the Nok/Mak Impact wireless and Minelab EQ800 wireless which are “OK” but lack the crisp tonal quality and higher levels of volume available in some of the others.
I would say that certain of the phones excel at certain things, in a high noise environment the Mal’s Super Blues on my Minelab units are a no brainer, likewise the Black Widows on the other machines, both great sound and provide high attenuation of outside interference with the detector audio.
I do hunt in rainy weather due to being on the West coast, splash and water proof phones are best as well as shore and wading, all the custom phones work well as designed for this environment.
I am waiting on a belated birthday present right now, (Anfibio), and am looking into a set of WProof phones for it specifically Nok/Mak or?????
