J.t., you're partly correct on the 6000 Pro XL but wrong on the M6.

The 6000 Pro XL was definitely, and I agree on this, one of White's best Coin & Jewelry detectors especially for more open areas and sparse to moderate trash conditions. It provided ample depth of detection and, being a small coil fan, the 6 1/2" concentric coil was my preferred coil for most applications. In more open areas I favored the 8" concentric over the 950.

However due to the four filter design which required a moderate to fast sweep speed, even making the best use of the signal balance control, it was not the best pick for trashier environments. That has always been best handled buy a 2 filter or 3 filter detector model with a smaller coil.

White's M6, also a very good coin hunting detector, was not a replacement for the 6000 Pro XL. The 6000 Pro XL was renamed at about the time they renamed the Classic IDX to the IDX Pro and Quantum XT to the QXT Pro. That was also about the same time they introduced the the MXT.

The MXT brought new technology to the White's Electronics model line because it was a 3 filter design. That was a concept that was first introduced in 1987 / '88 by Compass Electronics with their Scanner series. The M6 was introduced later not as a replacement for any model, but as a simple to use detector based on the MXT.

The 6000 Pro XL, renamed XL Pro, simply died off without a replacement as it was the last of the four filter circuit redesign models from White's.. it was the last model with those excellent needle meter designs because the meters we're no longer readily available, nor were the four position switches they used and several other components. I was informed when I was visiting White's a couple of times that as much as I would like to see that model continued but with a manual ground balance it was not possible because many of the components we're just not available anymore and it was going to be phased out.

No 4 filter machines after it thus there was no replacement per se. The M6 is a very good model geared for the advanced entry level or advanced beginner level, for those people who wanted to go out and just enjoy some Coin & Jewelry hunting but have a better quality product rather than their low end offerings. It would be really more of a simplified MXT without some of the adjustment features or modes.
