Okay, it's Monte's turn to answer his own question.thinking

First, once over the sadness of a great loss, and I've been there before, I know there are several great discontinued models I would shop for in the future. Fortunately I have five of them in my current Detector Outfit. But IF I had to select only ONE brand new, current-production detector to last me until next summer, I'd have to consider the following, listed alphabetically by manufacturer:

First Texas Products aka FTP: The only current model from their three brands that I have owned and liked and would make use of is the Teknetics T2+, and I'd use it almost exclusively with the 5" DD coil. It is a comfortable unit that offers enough features and works well.

Garrett: The new APEX, although I know I haven't evaluated one yet and they still need a smaller-size accessory coil.

Minelab: Although the EQ-800 is an OK model, my personal consideration would be the Vanquish 540 Pro Pack. That way I have two excellent coils and I'd use it where the SMF Multi-IQ might work to my advantage. Also, since I am making a shift to more Coin Hunting sites and less Relic Hunting sites, I feel it could work to my advantage.

Nokta / Makro: Yes, this is the 'new kid on the block' in the detector world, but they do have a lot to offer. Of their currently produced models, I could select from the Racer 2, Impact, Anfibio series and Simplex + With the first three, the Racer 2, Impact and Anfibio Multi I have the option of a 5" DD coil which makes a perfect fit for the trashier places, be them a ghost town, homestead or urban Coin Hunting near a picnic bowery or other high-use / high-trash location. With the Simplex +, until they bring out a smaller-size coil, the 5X9½ DD would be my 2nd coil pick, just as it currently is.

XP: Most do not realize that the 'XP' brand name stands for 'Expert' as noted in some of their literature, and here in the USA we only can pick from, the Deus and ORX. I don't care for the over-adjustment functions of the Deus or having to sort through some things I don't care for, such as 50-Tones. But the ORX has proven to me to be a very versatile and very functional detector, providing a 3-Tone Coin mode, just enough adjustment features to make it very functional, and I like mine with the 5X9½ DD HF coil and a 2nd coil choice for me would likely be the 9" HF coil. I had the 9" X35 and it's a good coil, but better for my wants and needs is the 9" HF coil.

The Garrett APEX, which will be in my hands pretty soon, is a model I am really hoping will improve the Garrett brand in our modern world of very competitive detector design and performance. The Tek. T2+ I already know and really like, especially due to the physical packaging and simple control adjustment. The Minelab V-540 is a already a proven performer and I know what to anticipate from it in different site conditions. And the XP ORX with the coils I referred to would also be one models I'd be penciling through as I marked off the Okay and Pass points as I work through a ONE ONLY detector purchase.

I asked the question after I had spent a few days here in my den, looking at the assortment of units on my wall and thinking about what is coming out, from Garrett, and wondering if anything new might come from FTP. I know what many people use and prefer, and I share their likes and owning one or more of the same detectors they have ..... but what if we all had to start fresh? That's what I pondered and therefore posed the question to all readers.

I liked a lot of the replies, and I figured some of them would be what I would hear about. Some I wasn't sure about but they made sense to me.

If I HAD to, I could take any of the models I mentioned from the above manufacturers and make do until next may or later. They all work and all will find stuff. Some a little better than others in what are some truly challenging dense iron contaminated sites. But for a variety of hunt sites, and some personal reasons, here is what I narrowed it down to:

If my shopping budget was under $500 for a brand new detector, it would be the Makro Racer 2 or the Nokta / Makro Simplex +. If my budget was over $500, I'd go with the Anfibio Multi.

So, figuring only one detector to get me through to next summer, it would be the Anfibio Multi, and here's why:

• I like the configuration and grip
• I could make use of the selectable frequencies for different hunt needs.
• I like the stock 11" round DD for working wide-open parks or plowed fields, etc.
• I could get the 5" DD as my one accessory coil and have performance close to what I now get with the CoRe and Relic in nasty iron.
• It has some adjustment functions that are not available on most of the competitive models I listed from other manufacturers.

And if I couldn't find one brand-new-in-the-box, my 2nd pick would be the Simplex + w/standard and 5X9½ DD coils, or a 3nd choice would be a Racer 2 w/5" DD coil. If Nokta / Makro went out of business and none of them were being made, I'd go with my 4th pick of a Minelab Vanquish 540 and a 5th pick would be the XP ORX.

Fortunately for me and the rest of the world, Nokta / Makro seems to be climbing to the top tier of the metal detector industry, and their product quality and performance are some of the examples why. That likely explains why a CoRe, Relic, Anfibio Multi and 2 Simplex + units are all a part of my current Defector Team. And when I sell one of the units I have listed, I'll likely add a Racer 2 Pro Pack back into my inventory.thumbs up

So, my answer for now is the Anfibio Multi and I only need to get an accessory coil. (Then find some good places to hunt until May of 2021.smiling smiley)
