It's not just the Simplex plus that has trouble.sad smiley

Bottle caps have been a nuisance ever since we started recreational metal detecting, and they seem to be more of an issue over the past 10 or 20 years as we have transitioned to more digital design circuitry.

UtahRich gave us a very good reply Pier question and emphasized the importance of facing the reality of their presence and really your decisions could be one of three:

1... would be to leave the area and find a spot where they didn't play checkerswinking smiley or throw out a lot of bottle caps.

2.. would be to select a number that you feel you could tolerate, such as Rich suggested, like 10 or 20 just to get some of them thinned out but not overtax your patience level.

3.. would be to recover all of the targets you encounter that would be trash, such as bottle caps, screw caps, pull tabs, foil, Etc. And that would help eliminate trash you'd encounter on future visits while also removing those shallower masking targets so you could get a little better dips and go after some older, better coins.

There are some easy techniques to use to help audibly classify pesky ferrous trash such as bottle caps, and I've been using those techniques since way back in the early 70s. We had our locations that had a lot of discarded bottle caps to deal with counter and in some places I would just recover them to get them out of the way. On other occasions I might be selective and audibly classify them so that I didn't spend my time recovering them and just moved on to the potential coin type targets.

I used that technique a lot, also, when I am traveling and come up on a place where I might have only one opportunity to search it and I want to just recover the most likely good targets and leave behind the junk. I treat those types of sites differently then the more local places where I plan to hunt more often and want to remove trash as I go

As for old detector discussions, if you would give me a phone call at your leisure. My phone number is in my signature below. Call anytime day or night and we can discuss that old Garrett.
