I live in the san diego area and most parks and beaches are open to metal detecting. Schools not so much anymore as they have been fenced off and security cams installed due to the stealing and vandalizing. State beaches you have to ask permission as some wont let you because of erosion . One in northern cali called half moon bay beach , you have to ask. Lots of metal detectorist out here especially on the public beaches at wee hours of the morning so you have to be one with your detector to find some of the better goodies.
