Westerns .. Garden Tilling ... and my older brother, Ed.

September 08, 2020 08:05AM avatar
I've always loved the outdoors and old places, and grew up watching old movies, especially westerns. Gene Autry, Tom Mix, Buck Jones, Tom McCoy, Gary Cooper, Randolph Scott, a young John Wayne and many, many more. Lesser-known by many today, but those black and white movies made it worth the 25¢ to 50¢ we'd pay to get into the Saturday matinee.

Fast forward to the fall of '64. we lived in the country, back then, a couple of miles outside the Portland Oregon city limits and I was tilling a future garden area for my mother to be ready for spring. I tilled deep and encountered a lot fo rocks that would jam-up the tiller. I'd shut down and remove them before they broke a pin, and was I was walking backward to dig the tiller in deeper and churn up the dirt and the tiller bound up again. I shut down and laid it on its side to remove the rock, but it was a now-mangled old coffee pot and I could read the patent date on the bottom of 1862.

Wow! That made the date 102 years old, and looking at the dug up area I could see I had tilled into what looked to be an old camp fire pit by the darkened, charred remnants of such. I then shoved around the area for any other signs of human activity but the coffee pot was all I came up with. I'd seen some of the early ads in popular magazines in the early '60s for Metal / Mineral Locators and I wondered what els I might find in the garden area or ????

My brother was a little over 5½ years older than me and his interest was drawn to Metal / Mineral Locators because it might be was way to get $$ and get out of working. At the time he was less interested in history or finding old stuff, unless it had a cash value. He bought one of the detector 'kits' from a magazine ad for $18.95 and, assembled, it called or my cream-colored transistor radio to work as the receiver. I buried a 3 lb. coffee can in our Mom's garden under 2" or dirt and kicked some of the bark chips back over the hole, just trying to duplicate the old coffee pot I had tilled up.

It didn't find the big coffee can. Ed threw the non-functional home-made device at me and said I could have that piece of crap (or a word suggestion similar) and I made it my electronics class project. I re-wound a new 8" search coil for that BFO and found all of his cold solder spots. My class instructor was interested in that new-to-him device, and I was more than pleased with my new home-made Metal / Mineral Locator because .... IT WORKED! The coffee can was no problem, and I found coins in our yard. Not very deep, but I was immediately hooked on the hobby.

That project lead to me making a couple more home-build devices, and then in the summer of 1968 I got my first factory-produced model in-hand, a White's Ghost Towner BFO w/6" wooden search coils and I haven't stopped since.thumbs up Well, actually I have stopped .... stopped making my own devices, that is.smiling smiley

This is absolutely the greatest outdoor sport I could ever imagine.

Nope, he didn't show interest at all. But he did get into it the summer of 68 briefly. N/T
