'Kickindirt' brought up an interesting topic about finding 'Old Coins.'

September 15, 2020 02:51PM avatar
He made a 2nd trip to a site hoping to have a '3 Old-Coin Day.' He said he can't get more than 2 older coins in a day, so that makes me wonder .... What is an older date coin for US coin? Folks in Europe can go back many centuries, but what would be an acceptable date, in your mind, to consider a US Coins to be 'old?'

We could consider any regular minted coins of 89+% Silver as being 'older' since they were last minted in 1964, a good 56 years ago. That's over half-a-century old today.

The 'Wheat-Back' Copper Pennies were last minted in 1958, so that would qualify any 'wheatie' as being at least 62 years old. I know that most average Hobbyists are very pleased when they find a 'wheat-back' 1¢ especially if they have only been detecting since about 1990.

How about the US 5¢ piece? I draw the line for those as being 'old' if they were minted in 1945 or older. It was way back, 75 years now, when World War II ended, and certainly 75 years is 'old' because that was before I came along in '49, so it has to be old. That would include to sort-of silvery mix 'War Nickels' even though they fall way short of being at least 89.?? % silver like the real silver coins, and it also includes all of the Buffalo Nickels and older.

So if we just look at those examples for the more commonly-used 1¢, 5¢ and 10¢ coins, I know I consider 1958 to be the last year I set my Wheat=backs Cents aside from the 'modern' pennies and consider them to be 'old. and Nickels have to be 1945 or older, and Dimes, Quarters and Halves need to be Silver to be considered 'old' and those would be 1964 and older. There's no cut-off date that I feel works across the boar for a mixture of coins.

Therefore, I m curious what readers of these AHRPS Forums consider to be 'old' to them? I know that back when I was healthier and more mobile, which would also include being much younger, I had many, many multi-coin days when a lot of the found coins would fit my cut-off limits. But through the years a lot of the older coins have been found in the common, every-day sites we hunt, and they have been thinned down a lot.

On an 'average' trip to my all-time favorite ghost town I would usually head home with 3 to 5 older coins, and on some of the better days I would nab 6 to 10 old coins to make it an extra special trip afield. But my last good-production trip when I found 3 or more old coins at that townsite it was 2001. With several injuries since then, and a number of other health issues that cramp my style plus two surgeries, I just can't hunt as often or as long as I used to. And beginning this year, I am making some changes as I transition back to urban Coin Hunting about 85% of the time when it used to be devoting 85% of my time to working old Relic Hunting places.

I've only kept a coin binder since 2016 so I can see that I haven't enjoyed very many 3-Coin or more days, with the following exceptions:

2-13-'16: 1927-D, '34-D, '40-D, '44-D, '46-S, '48-S, '51-S, '52-D and '54-S Pennies and 1944 Quarter

2-15-'16: 1939-S, '44-S, '48-S, '50-D and '57-D Pennies.

3-17-'16: 1899 an 1905 Pennies and 1907-S Dime.

3-03-'17: 1919, '44-D and '53-S Pennies and 1962-D Dime.

3-22-'17: 1925-S and '40 Pennies and 1936 Buffalo Nickel.

3-25-'17: 1927-S, '40-D and '41-D Pennies.

6-24-'17 1946-D, 4?-S and '53 Pennies and 1943-S Dime.

6-26-'17: 1952-D, '53-D, '53-S, '55-S and '56-D Pennies.

9-09-17: 1945, '46-S, '52-D and '58-D Pennies and 1920 and No Date Buffalo Nickels.

2-02-'18: 1945, '46-D, '46-S, '48-S and '51-D Pennies an two 1947 Dimes.

2-03-'18: 1944, '47-D and '47-S Pennies and a 1943-S Nickel

2-05-'18: 1945, '49-S and '52-S Pennies.

2-10-'18: 1942, '44 and '57-D Pennies.

2-15-'18: 1944, '55-D and '56-D Pennies.

2-17-18: 1940-S, '44, '45-S, '46, '50-S, '51, '552-D and '53- Pennies.

2-28-'18: 1940-S, '44-S and '45-S Pennies.

3-06-'18: 1946-S and '56-D Pennies and 1952-S Dime.

3-10-'18: 1925-S, '45-S and '55-D Pennies.

3-13-'18: 1919, two '46-S, '49-S, '52-D, '52-S and '57-D Pennies.

5-02-'18: 1934-D and '36-S Pennies and 1943-S Dime.

5-05-'18: 1936-S and '37-S Pennies and 1943 Dime.

10-19-'18: 1917, '19, '38-S, '39-S, '44-D and '45-S Pennies and 1924 and '41-D Dimes.

As you can see, many of those 3-Old Coin Days were because I was accepting all of the Wheat-back era pennies, but for good reason. All of them could have been silver, and many of those earlier-dated Pennies would have been Mercury Dimes and not a Roosevelt's.

This is just an example of how one person looks at "Old Coins', now tell us what you think?
