Re: hockey puck coils

Hockey pucks or as we call them in the UK stubble busters,i have a selection of these coils and use them for specific use and not necessary all the time.
The smallest one that i have and use as a coil is the 4'' Tesoro coil which is used mainly for river crossing/ford detecting and the main reason is these types of crossings are prime sites for roman votive offerings this could be coinage and even artefacts as the romans worshipped the water god.As the river crossing that i have access too are shallow maybe upto 10'' during the rainy season and less during the summer time the small coil when used either on my Lase B1 and B3 and also the Compadre are great for getting in between the rocks for locating these lost roman coins.

My other favourite small coils are the T2 5'' coil this is possibly my favourite small coil of all time as you can get amazing depth from this small coil, main use for it is in between stubble just after the crops have come off and the stubble is pretty stiff still, the worst type of stubble is OSR 'oil seed rape' which they are only after the heads of the crop so they cut the stalks in some cases upto 10-12'' off the ground level this in turn leave stalks which are basically like bamboo canes in dia and strength and the only way to get a coil down to ground level is by using the 5'' T2 coil and this combination has also found me some amazing gold celtic staters,George111 full guinea and a couple of Viccy Sovereigns. Also another use for the T2 and this small coil combination is that in recent years that farmers/landowner have been offered what they are called 'green waste' and most farmers are duped into thinking it is purely green but alas this is far from the truth as its crushed up trash that can have medical waste, circuit boards, syringe needles and many other nasties in it and they call this green waste, this then renders what was possible a very good productive site almost impossible to detect, but by using a small coil and methodically detecting one can get in between the non desirables and still find targets.

Although i mentioned the smallest dedicated coil that i use,the smallest size dia wise one is not actually a coil as such but i have use it as one and that is the DX-1 inline pinpointer probe on my DFX,when we found a hoard some years back we used a Pulse with a large coil and the DFX minus its coil but used the pinpointer probe on the bottom rod as they do have clips that hold the probe on the shaft and used just the pinpointer probe down the deep hole as it then acts like a 1'' dia coil with full discrimination that you can hear through the headphones, this setup did its job rathe well and has been the smallest coil that i have ever used.

Not sure if 6'' coils are classed as hockey pucks but i guess they are and the 2 main ones that i use are the 6'' coil on the Nox and the ultra rare 6'' Coiltek coil on my T2 it was a experimental coil and only sub 10 made worldwide but i got one brand new and it does work very well.

A rough definition of a 'hockey puck coil' and when & how I use them.

There was one use I had for the Tesoro 'hockey puck' coil.

I got surprising depth with my Bandido 2 microMax and the 4 inch coil.

Nope. Some of us were using 'hockey puck' to describe Tesoro's dinky coil long before there were CZ's.
