Questions for UtahRich - thinking

You had a lot of time on the Equinox 800 and then acquired the XP Deus. You then devoted a lot of field time with the Deus in order to learn it well. A while back, like close to the start of the year, if I recall, you commented that the Deus was more of you ghost town hunting device and the Equinox was more fitting as an urban Coin & Jewelry Hunting tool for parks, schools, yards, etc.

Now that we're getting into the fall weather season and close to time to hibernate where you live, you've had many more months to enjoy BOTH the Equinox 800 and the XP Deus. So the simple question here is:

How do you consider both of those detectors now for tackling the typical iron debris ghost town sites?

I am sure some readers would like to hear your thoughts on the matter. Also specifically taking on rusty tin.

Hey Monte,

I do have a lot of time on my 800. And a good amount of time on my Deus, though not close to that on my 800.

The following is just the world according to me, so I hope i don't ruffle feathers anywhere.

My time with my Deus has shown that it is exceptional at separating targets. even with what most of us consider a stock coil at 9" diameter (I have the 9" x35 coil). I wouldn't say that I am expert with my Deus. I just don't have enough time in field with it to make that claim. But I do have a good amount of in the field experience with it and enough finds with it to have an opinion that with the settings and coil I've been using on my Deus and the settings and the coils I've been using on my 800, that if I'm in thicker tin and nails I believe the Deus will perform better for me.

That said, Del has also spent a lot of time with his 800 and holds an opinion that it is an excellent performer in the TIN. Del has been at this long enough that I am not one to dismiss his opinion, nor the opinions of others that have A LOT of field time on a given machine. As much as it is tempting to pronounce my experiences as the reality for a given detector, they are really just 1 data point of many possible results that represent how a detector may perform.

I give Del's opinion a lot of weight and think that perhaps i need to do more experimenting with settings on my 800 the next time i'm in the thick of it. Why ? Well, I can't think of a single detector I have used over the years that I left on "factory settings" once i gained some expertise with it. I would expect you have the same experience, even your most basic Silver Sabre ┬ÁMax was tuned to your favorite coil for peak performance. Somebody new might now know that was even possible and miss out on the chance to up their game.

Factory settings are just a starting point for a detector, and I surely can't expect peak performance over a wide variety of sites using just the factory settings. This is one of the benefits of having a venue where we can compare notes and get out and hunt together. It speeds the learning curve.

Finding optimal settings for a site on your own may take time and many visits. I don't know that I've found optimal settings for hunting in the tin / nails. Comparing my 800 results with those of Del lead me think that I still have some work to do.

Hope that helps.

Rich -
