Adapting to talkative detectors ... ???

October 17, 2020 11:46AM avatar
If he is using the original MXT then he's just working with a single tone. If it was the MXT Pro, in the coin jewelry mode you could select the tone ID and that can get talkative enough to annoy a lot of people. I know people who have used some models, such as a three-tone detector and they do fine when they learn it, but switch them to a 4 tone detector or any multiple number beyond that and it can be a little difficult for people to adapt to it.

If you're using the Apex in the 0 disk mode then you hear all five tones. Better as you opt for other modes, such as jewelry or coin, you won't hear the iron but you're basically going to be running with three or four tones depending on how low you have the Discrimination set.

The other thing that can add to the audio annoyance with some folks is when using a coil such as the 6 x 11 double d, combined with the detector circuitry, some targets are going to have a little bit more jumpy Target ID and that means they can sometimes jump between two different tones between the left sweep or a right sweep over a Target.

There are a lot of detectors that I like when I use a 3 tone or 4 tone or 5-Tone ID. Such as Fisher F5 and F44, Garrett Apex, Makro Racer 2, Minelab Vanquish 540, Nokta CoRe or Relic, Teknetics Omega and T2, White's MX-7, XP ORX and several others. But I don't like the 7-Tone or 8-Tone ID of the M6, MXT Pro, MX-7 because it just gets too busy, for me, with an overload of audio information.

So if your friend is somewhat new to this Hobby it can be a little different trying to adapt to some of the audio of the Apex. Personally, I don't find it to be a problem at all. And while I like the audio quality of the tone on the White's model, I also like the audio of the Apex. Especially using their Wireless ms3 headphones.

Gregg, if you decide on an XP ORX, I almost agree with Andrew's suggestion.
