Randy, my pleasure. As always, I learned things myself.

That's one thing I enjoy about this great sport, there is always something to learn or realize, and in this case it was with model you're familiar with. The White' MX-7. One of the things I learned about three years ago right after I got my first MX-7 at White's was that it would retain a GB setting at shut-off. Hunting dense iron contaminated sites, like 'downtown' Toano Nevada by the hotel foundation, it is very challenging to find a very clean spot to adjust the Ground Balance. I just find some of the bad ground as close to the area as possible, or look for a good-size mineralized rock for the area, and adjust the GB. Tracking is 'Off' so the GB is 'Locked' and then I can hunt-away and even if I shut down for a lunch break, the GB is in memory when I start back up.

That was one of the design features of the MX-7 that isn't usually know or understood or talked about. But the other information that I posted, relating their default GB settings, is the one that I never quite grasped. The default setting is fine for a lot of people around the USA who have some rather mellow ground, and if they use Tracking or the Ground Grab function the MX-7 will be balanced for them anyway, but when hunting in a higher mineralized place like most of those I visit, the default setting is quite low.

I went to restore 5 times wit the MX-7, even after tracking or manually grabbing some different higher GB settings, just to see where it would restore as a default GB reference, and '69' was quite surprising. The MXT series, and M6, use a default turn-on setting of '83' by comparison, and most manufacturer's also rely on a higher reference to start up.

It's 1:48 AM .... I wonder what new and interesting thing I might learn today? .... That's the attitude I have always taken when it comes to metal detectors and metal detecting. Eager to learn more even all these decades later.
