What effects your detecting - good or not so much...

November 02, 2020 07:57PM
So, what I'm looking for here is your opinion, experience and thoughts on how different conditions and techniques can, should and do effect our detecting. Also I thought it would be a good idea to list them in order of magnitude from the greatest to the least.
For example: Wet/dry ground, mineralized/nutral ground, green grass, dry grass, clay, modern trash, rusted tin, coil type, high/low gain, high/low discrimination, coil height, swing speed, overlapping or not with your coil, all metal mode, high/low/ simultaneous multi frequency, tone breaks, iron audio, EMI, cloudy day, full moon etc. . You get the drift.

I know there are countless conditions and techniques we could list, so what I want to do is to explore those things that have helped or hindered you and what we might be able to do about it.

A good example is Oregon Gregg's dry spell with quarters. The condition was; No matter what he did he couldn't find a silver quarter. What he did was to break out a old friend, (read MX6 here), add a new, aftermarket coil to the mix, and get out and use it, and the condition was overcome! Seriously Gregg, congratulations on that quarter, it was hard won!

One of the conditions that has hindered me the most these last couple of years was having too many detectors and not taking the time to really learn any of them well. What did I do? I got rid of several of them and am now concentrating on few, one at a time. Right now, its the Equinox 800. I'm taking baby steps and concentrating on its basic language (2 tone) while sometimes comparing those signals and sounds against 5 and 50 tones. I'm learning about it's jumpy and compressed VDI scale and how to tell some trash from good targets. It's going quite well actually.

So, lets have it. Share your knowledge give us some good advice on how to learn for ourselves and maybe even avoid some pitfalls and bad habits.
