There was one this past decade, but not anymore.

Of course we never will know what tomorrow or next year might bring along to grab our interest, Something new and different. But looking back? ----

Is there a detector out there that you've always wanted to try, but for whatever reason, you just couldn't / didn't pull the trigger on buying one ?

I've always tried to buy or trade to get an intriguing unit in-hand to check it out, and when I couldn't or didn't it was usually because I had a friend who let me borrow one, and even more to my advantage were two multi-line dealer friends who did. One, in particular, would call me ahead of time when a new model was ordered and due, then I'd show up and we'd unbox and assemble it and give it a quick run-through in their shop. If I wanted, I could take the new demo / display unit for a week or two and see what I thought. And going back to '74 I have also had prototype or brand new releases provided me from a half-dozen detector manufacturers as well.

But for just over a decade, yes, there was one.

Maybe too expensive . Maybe came and went before your time . . . . Maybe very different from what you've been using . . . . You already had / have a corral full of detectors and couldn't justify another ?

No, it wasn't because it used to be too expensive. No, it wasn't too different from what I was using or had prior. Yes, I think part of the reason was that I had a model that, I thought, was rather similar and gave me what I wanted for that detector's desired applications, and therefore I never bought one ... before.

If you could borrow that detector from the manufacturer free for a year, what would it be ?

The Fisher F5

It got my curiosity up when it was introduced, but at the time I had plenty of detectors around, so I held off. Kept thinking about it, and when I was just about ready to get one I was called or e-mailed about a different model, the Teknetics Omega 8000, so I bought that instead. It worked great for me for many typical Coin Hunting applications and, as I read, it was kind of based on the F5 and the design engineer preferred it to the F5. So, I held off getting an F5 until just a couple of weeks ago, almost eleven years later.

For me . . . I came ohhhh so very close to buying a CTX 3030. So much money, . . . some questions at the time of quality control / leaking battery compartments / screen of death on initial start-up. I never did.

There are others, but i'd have to say this is the one that stands out in my mind.

My dealer friend let me borrow one for a couple of weeks to check-out against my Explorer II. I was having a difficult time as due to their icky weight and balance and my rotten health and mobility. It was different than the other FBS units I had or had-owned, but it wasn't more impressive in performance when four of us did some side-by-side evaluations, and the other guys were very dedicated Minelab FBS users. Plus, it was just too expensive for me to justify it for limited use-time.

There were some I have owned and really liked, and of them a couple that I wouldn't mind having around .... even though I know their strengths and weaknesses for me but they wouldn't get used all that often. I just liked them.

But the Fisher F5 was one model that, for a few different reasons, kept haunting me to get my hands on and give it a good try. See how it worked. I'd handled a couple, briefly, when someone brought their F5 to a seminar, but that was just some quick help on adjustments in a group environment. Maybe it helped keep my interest up in that model?

But of all the detectors I bought for my multi-model evaluation, the F5 was the primary unit I wanted to get for learning and comparing. Doing so, I quickly decided that model was staying around because it offers some design and performance features that I really like, and because some are different enough over what I already have I felt it would make a nice 'complement' in my Daily-Use Team of detectors with the right coil attached.

Oh, I might add the one other thing I like about it is that it's not only outfitted with adjustments that are useful and a design that works well, but it is a 'fun' detector to use, and enjoying myself in this great sport is what it is all about.
