Gregg a pain in the behind? eye rolling smiley. I just can't imagine that. smiling bouncing smiley

As for conducting a proper test to measure a detector for characteristics that are useful for the type of detecting you mostly do. Challenging.

What characteristics ARE you looking for? Jot those down then figure out a way to test for them. Then weight the test in relation to other characteristics.

For the areas I hunt, I would have included tests to measure and score for ergonomics, a depth test with a small corroding ferrous co-locate and a plain old depth test. I would also have done an audio test for modulation. Does the audio weaken as the depth of the target increases? Or is it saturated all the time? Is the audio informational or simply on and off? And I would have deleted a few tests that aren't so relevant to what I do.

These are just a few thoughts of what is important to me. And it differs from what Monte needs for the hunting he primarily pursues and you as well.

Anyway, I'll watch for Montes and your results.

Rich

Like detectors, I guess there is no test that is perfect. I agree that one should design a test(s) that will accurately reflect the type of detecting you are doing. Overall I really don't do many different types of tests as there are just way too many variables out in a ghost town to try and represent them all.

I do only one test, the NBT. It primarily will tell me if the machine and coil combo I want to use is suited for that type of environment. Plus its a nice learning tool, showing people why they should not rely heavily on VDI numbers etc etc. If my intent is to hunt an iron infested ghost town and I can hit the NBT 8 for 8, good enough for me.

One other test I do consider is the stack of silver test. My Nokta/Makros generally fail this test. So if someone says hey Gregg I have an old site a guy used to live, didn't trust banks, and buried his silver coins.........Well I know if I'm stuck with my Nokta/Makro machines, that I prob will do best if I use the 7" concentric coil on the Racer 2 as it hits the silver stack test. It's nice to know that info. The NBT gives me an idea about tackling good targets in iron and the silver stack lets me know what might work best if that is my primary target. Is funny how many machines will fail the stack of silver test.

So for the type of detecting I like and do 99% of the time I'm happy with just doing those 2 tests.Outside of that, it's fun to do all the other tests, but I don't lose sleep if I fail some of them.

Comparison Tests ... They can be interesting, and here's a 're-test' I'm doing.
