As for conducting a proper test to measure a detector for characteristics that are useful for the type of detecting you mostly do. Challenging.

What characteristics ARE you looking for? Jot those down then figure out a way to test for them. Then weight the test in relation to other characteristics.

Agreed, and that's why I kind of described the Test Scenarios I used because most are actual in-the-field encounters from places I have hunted, remote to urban, with one, the Separation Stick, to help give an idea of what a detector & coil might be capable of in some of those high coin-loss locations to let you isolate individual coins that are close together.

As for jotting down the characteristics someone is looking for, I agree, however, that really should be something they do before they start shopping for a detector in the first place. Many don't. They go by a manufacturer's ad sheet, some Dealer's suggestion, or from chit-chat they come across on forums, but they never jot things down and put in some effort to get correct answers.

For the areas I hunt, I would have included tests to measure and score for ergonomics, a depth test with a small corroding ferrous co-locate and a plain old depth test. I would also have done an audio test for modulation. Does the audio weaken as the depth of the target increases? Or is it saturated all the time? Is the audio informational or simply on and off? And I would have deleted a few tests that aren't so relevant to what I do.

These are just a few thoughts of what is important to me. And it differs from what Monte needs for the hunting he primarily pursues and you as well.

Anyway, I'll watch for Monte's and your results.

As I pointed out in the above post, a lot of the testing results anyone does is going to also be based on the search coil size, shape, type AND the coil-to-target distance. I plan on doing some 'Depth Tests' also, but we got a lot of rain and my raised garden beds are too muddy right now for me to enjoy planing several 'tests' of isolated coins as well as closely associated non-desired trash ... aka Ferrous Debris of some sort. Even those tests will raise some questions by readers, wondering in the area was initially a 'clean' site, or about the target's orientation to the surface, etc. However, I do plan on getting some depth-of-detection results as soon as things change from mud back to regular dirt.

In that testing I will also comment on a detector's audio design, such as having a Modulated or Saturated audio, or how it might or might-not be adjustable for a particular detector. And, as you pointed out, is it an "informational" audio or simply an On or Off response, kind of like some 2-Tone audio is a 'raw' audio while a 3-Tone or 5-Tone audio might be a 'processed' and uninformative audio. I'll also comment if it is VCO enhanced or not, As you called attention to, and I know a lot of people do not understand, there is a lot of audio information we might or might not hear from various detector designs and settings.

This 'Testing' I am doing, or that which anyone does, is nothing more than a 'Test' to help to detector operator learn more about strengths and weaknesses, as well as the potential performance on targets in an assortment of environments .... but the #!-Test is gong to be getting out and using different detectors and coils in the real-world, and then associate what we learn from 'Testing' to what we learn from real-life encounters. Then we have to factor in target orientation, size, and alloy content, the surrounding ground mineral matrix, and add to that the closeness or relationship of any ferrous or non-ferrous object that might be within a reasonable distance of the desired object that could effect its detection. By that I mean any other target above the desired keeper, off to the side at some relationship, or located below the good target
