Customizing a Test -

Like detectors, I guess there is no test that is perfect. I agree that one should design a test(s) that will accurately reflect the type of detecting you are doing. Overall I really don't do many different types of tests as there are just way too many variables out in a ghost town to try and represent them all.

I do only one test, the NBT. It primarily will tell me if the machine and coil combo I want to use is suited for that type of environment. Plus its a nice learning tool, showing people why they should not rely heavily on VDI numbers etc etc. If my intent is to hunt an iron infested ghost town and I can hit the NBT 8 for 8, good enough for me.

One other test I do consider is the stack of silver test. My Nokta/Makros generally fail this test. So if someone says hey Gregg I have an old site a guy used to live, didn't trust banks, and buried his silver coins.........Well I know if I'm stuck with my Nokta/Makro machines, that I prob will do best if I use the 7" concentric coil on the Racer 2 as it hits the silver stack test. It's nice to know that info. The NBT gives me an idea about tackling good targets in iron and the silver stack lets me know what might work best if that is my primary target. Is funny how many machines will fail the stack of silver test.

So for the type of detecting I like and do 99% of the time I'm happy with just doing those 2 tests.Outside of that, it's fun to do all the other tests, but I don't lose sleep if I fail some of them.

Good comments. Knowing how a detector is likely to behave in certain scenarios is import when you're trying to achieve the best results possible out in the field. And as you and Monte and others have posted above and many times before - it really isn't possible to emulate every possible circumstance that you would come across in the field. But, we still have to educate ourselves on how our detector will likely respond so we can be prepared. Like you and Monte have said so many times, in my words, get yourself pre-educated and then get out and hunt and get educated a lot more.

Comparison Tests ... They can be interesting, and here's a 're-test' I'm doing.
