A report of a lot of detectors using their 'standard' search coil.

November 19, 2020 07:46AM avatar
Since I am using a lot of detectors, I figured I would report the results I've had by first showing how they did using their 'standard' search coil. Just this information alone can be interesting because it points out some differences based on search coil shape and type, and also shows some differences based on a detector's circuitry design, and in other cases simply a difference based on operating Frequency using the same detector and same 'standard' search coil.

I have some smaller and some larger coils for most of the detectors I've been evaluating, and I am expecting some new coils to be delivered today and hopefully early next week. Then I'll post the results using the same detectors with smaller-than-standard search coils, followed by a post with them using larger-than-standard coils.

Anyway, the bulk of those who buy a detector to get started in this great sport do so relying only on the 'standard' search coil because they haven't learned the benefits of an accessory coil yet, or it just wasn't in their budget at the time. Therefore, here are the results of the detectors using ONLY their standard search coil. I will add comments, if necessary, for any particular models at the end. Also, remember some of the settings used to do this group of tests were because they kind of got started when OregonGregg bought a new 7" Detech DD coil to bring his White's M6 and MXT Pro out of retirement as display pieces.

Both of them rely on a default single-tone audio, so the decision was made to adjust the Discrimination level to just barely reject or Discriminate the Iron Nails on the Nail Board Performance Test. That means any positive audio response would then be considered a dig-worthy hit on any of the Test Scenarios. Here are the evaluated detectors with their 'standard' search coils, listed in order of Total Points, with a possible '23' for 100%. The following numbers after the Total Points are, in order, for each Test w/possible Points:

NBPT (8) - 1¢ under Rock (2) - Silver Stack (2) - Nail 5¢ Nail (2) - Nail on Button Front (2)- Separation Sticks (7)

'22' .. 8-2-2-2-1-7 .. Tesoro Bandido II µMAX w/8" Concentric
'22' .. 8-2-2-2-1-7 .. Tesoro Silver Sabre µMAX w/8" Concentric

'19' .. 7-2-2-1-0-7 .. Fisher F5 w/5½X9¾ Concentric (they call it a 10" elliptical )

'18' .. 7-2-0-1-1-7 .. Garrett Apex w/6X11 DD (when using 20 kHz or MF Frequency settings.)
'18' .. 7-2-0-1-1-7 .. Nokta FORS CoRe w/7X11 DD
'18' .. 7-2-0-1-1-7 .. Nokta FORS Relic w/7X11 DD

'17' .. 6-2-0-1-1-7 .. Garrett Apex w/6X11 DD (when using 15 kHz)
'17' .. 8-2-2-0-0-5 .. Nokta / Makro Midi Hoard w/fixed 7" Concentric

'15' .. 4-2-0-1-1-7 .. Garrett Apex w/6X11 DD (when using 10 kHz)
'15' .. 4-2-0-1-1-7 .. Nokta / Makro Simplex + w/ 11" DD round-shape

'14' .. 4-2-0-1-1-7 .. Garrett Apex w/6X11 DD (when using 5 kHz)
'14' .. 3-2-0-1-1-7 .. Minelab Vanquish 540 w/9X12 DD
'14' .. 2-2-2-1-0-7 .. Teknetics Omega 8500 w/11" BiAxial (measures 7¼X11¼ .. and BiAxial means DD)

'12' .. 4-2-1-1-2-2 .. White's MX-7 w/950 Concentric

'10' .. 3-2-0-1-1-3 .. Teknetics T2+ w/11" BiAxial (measures 7¼X11¼ .. and BiAxial means DD)

'8' .... 3-1-1-1-0-2 .. White's M6 w/9" Concentric (compares with the 950 Concentric 'standard' not available)

Comments:

• The Nokta / Makro Midi Hoard scored well simply due to the small 7" Concentric standard coil. It is a fixed coil, and the Iron range was Discriminated out (rejected). Due to the smaller coil and lower power, creating a smaller EMF plus the internal coil windings, it scored fair on the Separation Stick, better than some of the others detectors (as you will see when I do the smaller-coil post) with their Concentric coils in the ±7" diameter size. Also, that helped it do okay on the NBPT with the close Iron Nails. However, it failed on the 5¢ coin between the two Iron Nails and the Iron Nail on the Button Front.

• Note the similar performer of the Garrett Apex in all of the comparisons except for the NBPT. All I had, at the time, was the 'standard' 6X11 DD, but I was able to stand in one position and run through all of the land-based Operating Frequencies. As I anticipated, the higher-the-frequency, the better it was able to handle the NBPT. I had expected it to not do as well on the closely-positioned Iron Nails when operating at a lower Frequency and, that's what happened. All other Test Scenarios matched, but not on trying to tackle the four Nails surrounding the Zinc Cent. So no change in search coils or settings or detector, simply a Frequency change made the differences. Multi-Flex and '20' kHz compared the same.

• The Vanquish 540's biggest problem on this Test was that the 'standard' coil is a larger-size 9X12 DD and that means it is covering more Iron on the NBPT which hampers performance. Other than that it wasn't too bad except for bot being able to hit on the Short Stack of Six Silver Coins, but that has to do with the software design, just like many other detectors that struggle on that sample. On a positive side, even though a larger-size coil it was still able to hit all 7 Trade Tokens on the Separation Stick with the coil positioned closely, which also means it didn't have an overload issue to impair performance like some detectors do.

• The Nokta / Makro Simplex + also did well, overall, using the 'standard' round-shaped 11" DD coil and still hitting all targets on the Separation Stick. And 4-out-of-8 on the NBPT would usually be expected because the larger-size coil was hampered by the four Iron Nails being so close to the coin. Also the fact that it, like many other makes and models, just can not produce a good hit on the Short-Stack of Silver, and there's nothing you can do about it because it has to due with the internal circuitry design, generally tied to the Disc. mode's GB reference.

• Sometimes search coils are close to similar, like the measured 7X11 on the Nokta CoRe & Relic vs the 7¼X11¼ on the Teknetics Omega & T2+. These four models span a Frequency range from 7.60 kHz for the Omega to 13 kHz for the T2+, 15 kHz for the Core and 19 kHz for the Relic, yet the CoRe & Relic easily beat the Omega and T2+ on the NBPT, and the T2+ didn't match the Omega 8500 or the CoRe or Relic on the Separation Stick and the only reason had to do with circuity design handing the signals, and possibly some overload influence?

• With regard to coil size and a detector's Overload Audio design that prevents the coil from being worked too close to a target, that caused some performance loss with th White's M6 w/9" and MX-7 w/950. I just couldn't get better performance due to the Overload. All detectors were operated at about 90% to Full Sensitivity, but even though I usually work the MX-7's at 8-out-of-10, I dropped the MX-7 down to a Sensitivity level of '5' for the Tests and even checked afterwards with a setting of '00'.

Anyway, there's something to think about and relate to your detector an how it does, or might do, using a 'standard' search coil. With some of these detectors there can be quite a difference in performance when using a smaller-size search coil, and I'll continue working on some of those evaluations later today when a couple of coils arrive and then one more I hope early next week. It all depends on how shipping is going to get that one here.

One more thing. I didn't list a Makro Racer 2 here because I don't have a ;'standard' 7X11 DD coil. But Gregg does, and he'll bring one by so we can check the Racer 2's performance, plus he'll have his original Racer tag along and we'll put it to the test as well. I'll then add those results to this post when finished.
