Rusty Tin? Yes, it's on the agenda.

Hey Monte -

Any thoughts about adding a test involving that awful, no good, terrible RUSTY TIN stuff ? Or is it one of those things that all detectors typically selected for ghost town hunting will fail?

Rich -

Yes,, Rich, I plan on doing further 'Tests' as I assemble an assortment of 'typical' problem trash targets. But it is no different than if I went out and just randomly picked up four different -size Iron Nails and grabbed an Indian Head 1¢ and picked any position I wanted for them. Instead, my NBPT is an exact duplication of an actual in-the-field encounter. A valid Test Scenario.

Now, if i set out to find a few good targets, be it a 1¢ coin or 5¢ con, AND it was located in a natural, undisturbed setting with nearby Rusty Tin, then I will gladly duplicate that exact Test. The trick is making sure I find the coin and any and all ferrous debris that is closely-positioned so as to have an effect on the EMF.

Passing and Failing ANY Test, to include those posted earlier today, involves a combination of:

→ Desired Target(s)
→ Amount and type of challenging condition
→ Detector Model selected
→ Search coil size, type and shape
→ Available user-controlled Settings
→ Circuity design that can help or hinder performance
→ Settings used
→ Operator control of coil height, sweep speed, etc.

All detector will not always fail when Rusty Tin is encountered, but they do need to be able to handle the challenges that type of trash presents. Some makes and models with an ideal search coil for tough tin conditions can, if worked in a most efficient manner and with the best functional setting, provide very good in-the-field performance. But the other uncontrollable thing is we do not know how much Rusty Tin might be present, how big or small it is, the orientation to the search coil, just how 'rusted' it is or if it is more of a full-bodied piece of metal with some surface rust.

In short, all you can do with any test that anyone sets-up is see how well you and your outfit can handle that specific test. Without something that can be duplicated,it is nothing more than just another random in-the-field encounter and all you can do is put all the odds in your favor and trust all goes well that day. The same holds true if we try doing some 'testing' using an assortment of pull-tabs or pry-tabs and bottle caps and few coins out of a pocket. How well can our gear and our talents handle any sort of ferrous challenge we encounter? Just a lot to ponder, but Yes, I do plan to gather up some Rusty Tin and do some testing, maybe sometime this winter.

Comparison Tests ... They can be interesting, and here's a 're-test' I'm doing.
