But it is no different than if I went out and just randomly picked up four different -size Iron Nails and grabbed an Indian Head 1¢ and picked any position I wanted for them. Instead, my NBPT is an exact duplication of an actual in-the-field encounter. A valid Test Scenario.

YOUR KIDDING ME RIGHT MONTE?? RIGHT??

Joel, what I said was anyone could select 4 different Iron Nails and an Indian Head Cent and position them in any fashion they wanted to see how things work with the detector and coil they have. their outfit might work great, work fair or flunk terribly. Then they make a comment that anyone ought to get four Iron nails and an Indian Head Cent and try their own test. But, what test? Your random arraignment will likely differ from everyone else's as a random scattering or arrangement.

In short, it would simply be a suggested test using 5 targets, 4 ferrous nails and 1 a copper-based coin with no commonality to their orientation, and that is no different than any of us saying we hunted an old stage stop, found three old coins and there was a lot of discarded ferrous debris. We can all do that, if our detector and coil and settings are capable, but there isn't anything set in stone to be a dedicated same-same test that anyone can do, anywhere at anytime they want with an assortment of devices and coils. Doing so our results will be comparable because all 'tests' will be going against the same challenge of targets and orientation.

When i came upon the 4 Iron Nails surrounding the Indian Head Cent, in a natural setting, it gave me and five others on our ghost town outing a chance to compare our detectors and coils to see how they would perform on an exact same layout challenge. Then I marked them all, picked them up and duplicated it to make my Nail Board Performance Test, which is an exacting duplicate of an in-the-field encounter. Thus, it makes a very valid 'Test Scenario' for anyone, anywhere, with any detector and coil set-up. Remember, it, like ANY 'test', is simply that. It is a 'Test' of one type of challenge we might want to be prepared or in our hunting excursions.

Now, to the Rusty Tin UtahRich asked about. The point I was getting at, or suggesting, is that he or you or I might eyeball four different size pieces of Rusty Tin and grab an Indian Head Cent and simply lay them out in some fashion to test. but if Rich and You and I laid them out in different orientations, we are going to get different results that would NOT make a consistent 'Test.' The result would be an inconsistent and thus invalid comparison.

So, what would be good, would be to locate an actual good target / bad target, or more, and have it be something we can then duplicate so everyone can do the same comparison 'Test' with whatever unit and coil they have to try.

With Iron Nails it is much easier to match-up and duplicate. Rusty Tin? Just such a rough challenge, as well as any sort of ferrous-based junk, because there are so many different sizes, shapes, orientations, and especially different levels of deterioration and decay that 'Rusty Tin' can be so different ... one piece to another. Differences in how they will affect the EMF and, therefore, differences in how they might partially, or fully, mask a desired target.

I'm going to do some comparisons with ferrous debris, and see what can be done to find, in-the-field, and duplicate a consistent 'Test' with Rusty Tin. It's not easy. Currently, the best we could do is be out on a detecting trip with a friend or two and, when an interesting target is detected in a questionable environment with tin present, simply call the others over before the target spot is disturbed and ask the others to compare their detectors, coils, settings and sweep presentation the same as we use. That would at least give us an indication of how our detector, coil and settings compare with how their choices might handle that specific in-the-field find.

I hope I didn't lose anyone on understanding what I mean, and also hope they understand just how much of a challenge a dense array of different sizes of long-discarded 'tin' can be. Take an 'average' metal detecting Hobbyists who mainly Coin & Jewelry Hunts their city sites and plant them in 'downtown' Toano Nevada or up here in the heart of 'Lone Tree' or 'Lonesome Arch' Oregon and watch the surprised look on their face when they realize just how tough all those small shards of tin or bigger pieces can be. Tough to duplicate, and i'm referring only to the 'Rusty Tin', not even considering the Iron Nails or other assortment of metal discards out there.
