High-Quality vs Decent-Quality vs Cheapo-Quality battery costs.

November 18, 2020 03:56PM avatar
Del, I have my 8-AA XLT, as well as a 4-AA CoRe, Relic and V-540 in my current outfit. Now, I am using the NiMH rechargeable AA batteries that came in my V-540, or I can use them in my other devices, but with all the flashlights I have around and other things that call for an AA battery, I rely on Alkaline batteries. I buy a 60 count pack at regular store price of about $10.95 so that makes each battery cost 18¼¢. To fill a 4-cell detector that equals 73¢ and to make a White's work it costs $1.46. If any make or model only lasted 20 Hours of run-time, the cost Per Hour would only be 3⅔¢ or 7⅓¢ .... and that's if you only lasted 20 hours per set of batteries. Easily in anybody's budget, and that's based on my MSRP for 60 excellent batteries.

I have checked batteries for decades, trying to find the best buy for the best performance life, and i bypass the cheap batteries as much as possible, but have found some 'house-brand' batteries I like. For example, the Costco AA 'Kirkland' batteries were, and maybe still are, made by P&G, the folks who made the Duracell copper-top batteries. Those that Gregg showed in his photo are the ones we buy at Tractor Supply. I am not sure who makes them, but I have an ample supply in my tote that I bought when they had a sale of a 48-pack for $5 or $6.

Do they last as long as my favorite high-quality brand? No, not quite, but they have generally held up quite well, lasted nearly as long, and were affordable for a device that will often be on, in-use, and wear them out. But at $6 for a 48 pack, those AA Alkaline batteries only cost 12½¢ each, or 50¢ to fill a 4-Cell detector and an even $1 to power-up an 8-AA White's. Simple math that has worked well for me for a long time and Gregg also has been doing well with his Decent-Quality batteries, too.

Not a lot of ways to go out and have fun at such a budget price, and not be concerned about rechargeables croaking or needing to charge them up.
