Rich, the power drain is the main issue I have.

The Vanquish 540 performs well for what it's strengths are, and like the Equinox, when it does get a good coin target the audio response is what some would call 'splendid.' It is more of a modest-to-open area detector for my wants and deeds, and does "OK' in some iron contaminated sites, but isn't the best pick for the really terrible places I often hunt. It is a 'fun' detector to use because I like the audio report in the ML-80 wireless headphones, the detector is comfortable t use with either he 5X8 DD for routine hunting, or the 9X12 DD in plowed fields or big grassy parks, etc.

As we all learn, no perfect detector so it has its place. Doesn't bump my other Daily-Use Team of units out, to be sure, but they also have a weakness at times so I pick-and-choose the better detector & coil combination for the site environment I encounter. It's in that under $550 detector group, but most of the time I am going to grab an Apex, Simplex + or F5 for their strengths ... along with a comfortable balance and feel.

What is kind of interesting about that is the Apex and Simplex + are powered by a built-in LiPO battery and heir run-time is really impressive. The F5 is juiced-up with 2-9V alkaline batteries and it, also, can provide a decent run-time. So out of these four favorite models I use, the only one relying on AA battery power is the V-540, and it is the thirstiest of them all. It doesn't matter if it is a top-quality Alkaline, a decent-performing Alkaline, or any of the MInelab, Varta or Eneloop NiMH rechargeable batteries I have ... the Vanquish 540 will have a shorter run-time than other AA-powered detectors I've used, to include the CoRe, Relic, Gold Racer, Racer 2, MXT Pro, M6, MX-7, XLT, T2+ ... or most any other unit I can think of. I don't mean it's dead in an hour or two, but if all detectors were turned on at the same time, it will last a while, just not as long as everything else. That's why I like to use the NiMH in it.
