Sad truth is most people never use a SMF enough to know what they are doing. The DFX, CZ and Apex are not that technical and are fairly easy to learn. However most of the Minelab machines and the Whites V series are a different animal. They are not as bad as people lead you to believe in iron trash. The e-trac is actually quite capable in trash with a small coil and the right settings. I'm not out to change anyone's mind. But the reality is they are excellent machines and the finds made by them are proof.

I was standing in an old park today with my 800 ever so slowly circling a signal trying to decide if it was a Digger or Leaver. I had sensitivity at max. Depth gauge was maxed out, audio was squeaking up in the higher coin range and was present about 80% of the passes. Definite coin I thought. Time to dig. A minute or so later I was at 9", the full depth of my garrett carrot pin pointer and I was right over the top of my target in the bottom of the hole. I took out another inch of soil and there was a wheat cent. It brought a smile. I was hoping for silver but pleased for a coin.

I added it to the other wheat cent, that one I found at 7". That wheat cent was co-located with a small wad of folded aluminum foil two inches above it and a large rusty four inch nail 3" below it. As I swept over the 3 items, there were consistent target ID flashes in the penny / dime range with an accompanying high tone, so I investigated.

My third keeper was a disappointing 1mil Utah Sales Tax Token. Also found at seven inches, but with a single very rusted nail.

The sun went down and I headed back to the car pleased with a couple good finds, hoping next time I'll be rewarded with silver and gold.

Andrew, I couldn't agree more about learning ones detector; especially in regards to the Minelabs. Their behavior is very telling, but it is learned over time. A lot of time. And many are quick to dismiss and move on to easier detectors never learning the Language of their Minelab.

Thanks for the thoughts.
