Re: What are your thoughts about "Who's next?" .. or .. "What's next?"

personally I think the market below $500 is way oversaturated at this point. In fact I'm going to spend this weekend evaluating my lower end detectors and getting rid of everything except one detector in the $500 and under range. I'm thinking the only one that will stay will be the Vanquish 540. If you look at he market, the over $1000 category is the least saturated. You basically have the PI's, Minelab eTrac and CTX, XP Deus and Tarsacci MDT 8000. That category is most likely the most profitable for metal detector manufactures as well.

Minelab has already stated that they will no longer make single frequency only metal detectors. So that leaves SMF with SSF capabilities and PI's machines for them. Word has it they are working on an Multi IQ that will be similar to the eTarc and CTX in that it will evaluate both the ferrous and non-ferrous characteristics of a target at the same time. That machine won't be cheap, but I definitely plan on getting one. They also supposedly have the GPX 6000 set to come out shortly. Hopefully they will incorporate wireless headphones, rechargeable battery and waterproof into the design. I'm guessing that machine will be in the $6,000 range and believe it or not people will be tripping over themselves to get one.

XP has a new machine on the horizon and word has it it's being tested right now. I've heard rumors that it could be anything from a SMF, a PI or simply a waterproof wired version of the Deus. The sources I have, say they have no plans on entering the low end category so it will most likely cost $800 or over whatever it is.

Yes Nokta Makro has a SMF on the horizon but I worry that it will be similar to the Apex. Meaning it won't have the same target evaluation abilities of the Equinox, eTrac or V3i's. I'm sure they plan on making it affordable as they have done with their other offerings in the past.

Obviously Garrett will probably incorporate SMF into their future machines and hopefully they can improve on it's performance by using the patents they obtained from Whites.

Fisher/Teknetics/Bounty Hunter appears to be putting all their efforts into the new Impulse AQ and it's predecessors like the Gold and Relic version. I haven't heard anything about improvements to their other line of detectors other than the repackaging of technology in a model with a different name. If they would simply add wireless, waterproof and rechargeable batteries to their current technology it would at least put them in the modern word.

IMO the future is in SMF and PI technology. PI's have the most promise for the future. It's just going to take people thinking outside the box to make it work affordably. A PI sends so many frequencies and pulses into the ground at the same time and has the ability to collect date that no other technology has. The challenge is how to take that data and give it to the user. Right now it's totally by ear and takes practice to interpret what your ears are hearing. Audio and visual ID would be optimal. PI's have the ability to ignore targets, almost to the point of seeing through them by simply adjusting the timing. So if we had the ability for the detector to send multi frequencies, pulses and change the timings 1000's of times per second and then deliver the data, it would be a whole new view of the ground beneath us. We would then have the ability to truly see through iron. Pi's can already do it, I've witnessed it first hand. The problem right now is that you have to choose what targets to ignore, but you still have to deal with what's left.

So very true regarding good-target masking.
