They are needed!!!
A smaller-size coil, in the 4½" to 6" round shape or maybe a small elliptical like 3½X6,
or slightly smaller, are a must-have size for working so many places with a lot of dense brush, building rubble, and very dense debris where even good mid-size coils can fit or work well. Ghost towns, homesteads, major areas with a lot of demolition, heavy-use picnic spots and sections of some old-time resorts, and the list goes on. I've relied on a 6" diameter coil, or one between 5" and 7", since the summer of '68 and wouldn't have a detector outfit without at least one or two detectors at-the-ready with a small-size coil. Coils in that size range have accounted or about 90%-95% of all my coins, trade-tokens, gold and silver jewelry and other desireables over the past half-a-century plus.
It seems a lot of the videos we see have folks out hunting plowed fields or pastureland in Europe or comparable sites in the mid-west to eastern USA and using nothing but over-size 'standard' coils to larger coils. Seems like some detector makers have forgotten to provide coils for a lot of savvy detectorists in the small size.
Maybe 2021 will bring a change to that thinking.
