It's kind of too bad that many newcomers to the metal detecting sport, especially over the past 20-30 years, do not really understand what Ground Balance really is, or how it can help-or-hinder detector performance. Also sad is the number of detectors, not just beginner-level but many of the mid-range to top-dollar models, rely on a factory preset GB for their Discriminate modes. They might have GB adjustability, but it is often only functioning for the Threshold-Based All Metal or Pinpoint operation. That means it can be having a negative impact on the overall detector performance, or for at least some search applications.
I know my F5 isn't the deepest-detecting model I own. And it might have another drawback here or there, but overall it is a very capable device for a lot of uses AND it lets me be in control of working with a 'proper' Ground Balance regardless of the search mode I am using. I wish more detectors would be designed to provide us with such operator control.
