Can a low "Iron Volume" setting visibly improve detector separation, in a 2D Nailboard test, or in a 3D depth separation test?/b]
No, it doesn't have any bearing on the
visible enhancement of a Non-Ferrous target, or trying to unmask a desired Non-Ferrous / Ferrous situation where they are very close. However, it can alert the detector operator a little better of some blended-audio target responses because the Low-Volume from the Ferrous debris is significantly quieter or softer-sounding than the loudness from the Non-Ferrous target, or the blended-audio of the two which is still going to usually be a lower read-out and audio tone, but still in the Non-Ferrous range that will produce a louder or more distinctive audio report. and I'll add that in most of my detecting I rely strongly on the Audio response, and especially in dense Iron contaminated sites Audio is #1 and while I might glance at the Visual display, I seldom rely on the Visual report.

Will this translate into better separation results?
Or does such a setting only improve the sound comfort of detection?
Yes, it can be helpful in a 'separation' test between Ferrous
(Iron) and Non-Ferrous targets due to the assignment of the Target Volume. Louder or Full-Volume from a Non-Ferrous target Vs a quieter, Low-Volume from the Ferrous target. In very dense Iron debris locations the frequent Full-Volume or Loudness from an abundance of Low-Tone Iron can get to be a bit overpowering or annoying, and with some makes and models that reply on a 3-Tone or 5-Tone Audio ID, some folks have a difficult time discerning the Full-Volume Iron low-Tone from the Mid-Tone, and that can cause them to ignore a possible good target close to Iron. Advantage for those using Iron Audio Volume control.
