i have an AT Pro that is unquestionably my go to unit. it has produced. the 5x8 is the main coil. but i have learned the big stock unit, although my arm does not like it.
Coinboy is youthful and can probably swing one better. when we get old the joints wear out. i do have a sniper coil, i call them hockey pucks, and one for my Tesoros also. they seem to be useless to me. i never find much with one. the sharpshooter 4x6 dd i had with my Mxt was a good smaller coil that produced.
i am like coinboy in if i can hunt the open, less trash i am fine with the performance of the big coils, and i have learned to adjust swing and movement with them. to a degree, its just the pain afterward. thats dictating what i use now. balance/ weight is a must. .
the smallest coils are my least favorite, the midsize just fine. the large work great for people with better joints.
kind of a 3 bears/coils thing.
I like Garrett's 5X8 DD 'Ripper' on my Apex as a day-to-day, general-purpose search coil and it isn't fatiguing at all.
I also like their "standard-size" 8½X11 'Raider' DD on my 2nd Apex because it handles the open areas very well. Also, while a little heavier, it isn't fatiguing for me, either. And those two coils make the Apex handle most of the places I like to hunt where I might want to rely on audio Tone ID as well as visual TID / VDI read-out.
I can get into some plowed fields or pasture land with the standard to bigger-size coils, and yes, sometimes there are deeper targets to be found. But they got there for a reason, and that reason wasn't from 'sinking.' Coins and other stuff don't sink' but instead get to where it is due to displacement.. Plowing, foot traffic, animal traffic, other forms of disturbance or erosion. None of that is 'sinking.'.
And, for me, the 'standard' coils are really larger-than-stock coils because a 'stock' or most-used coil is a mid-size, such as the 5X8 or 5X9½. And I couldn't agree more about weight and balance having more of an effect on us once we've 'aged & ripened' a bit.
