Just some personal thoughts / observations.

rich! it just seems like they know what experienced hunters want, and they "deliver!" guys that have been at this for years know what they want, and minelab has developed technologies to meet those "needs!"
Your comments really hold true from all dedicated detector makers, but they don't always 'know' what consumers want, nor do they always follow through with filling those desires. In this case, look at Minelab. Serious detectorists have wanted a detector with smaller-size available search coils to work well in very dense iron nails and rusty tin contaminated sites.

We didn't really get that with the BBS Sovereigns in the '90s, or the FBS models for the past ±20 years ... and finally they brought out the Equinox series, then the Vanquish. Both are better than earlier offerings, from 25 years or so. The urban Coin Hunters, however, still have their suspicions that models like the Explorer II, E-Trac and CTX-3030 might be better for a lot of urban Coin Hunting.. Dedicated gold jewelry hunters are likely pleased to have the 'modern' units over those they have promoted for a long time.

most of us are "coin shooters",so what do they do? they develop technology that "helps" most find stuff in "cooked" and "burnt" parks and other public places that have not produced for years.
I know some very serious urban Coin Hunters who tried the 'modern' Equinox 800 and even the Vanquish 540, only to go back to their Explorer II and CTX-3030 to work the old-use parks and such, especially when it came to improved high-conductive silver coin finds.

Keep in mind, too, that you're replying to UtahRich who asked about popular detectors in foreign countries, and you mention hunting "public places" such as school grounds or city parks. From a lot of what I have heard through the years, a lot of countries do not have, nor allow detecting in, the so-called 'public places' as we have here in the USA.

their products "revive" the anticipation factor which is so "necessary" to continue to enjoy, and to produce "tangible" result in the field!
I agree that we need to sometimes be 'revived' as individuals, and it helps the metal detecting industry if they can keep a spark in it, but that really happens with ANY newer detector from ANY manufacturer.

they instinctively deliver, and "hit" right at the heart of what "experienced" hunters want..the question is, how many of these can they sell?..sales are through the roof! everybody else is playin' "catch up!"
I would argue that they 'instinctively deliver' or that they 'hit right at the heart' of what experienced hunters want. Trust me, I am not the only one who has some experience and has tried their newer detectors, only to let them go because something better was already in my detector outfit, or was a better newer acquisition .... for ME and the types of sites I enjoy hunting. I am not alone.

Urban Coin Hunting? 'Zinclon' has a good deal of experience, and he recently had the pleasure (???) of checking out a Vanquish 540 and encountered a small 'pocket-loss' of 3 coins, in the grass, on top of the ground, in plain sight. A Quarter laying flat and against a Dime, and on top of the Dime was a Nickel off to the side, slightly exposing part of the Dime. It was a surprise moment for him, to be sure. NOT an impressive coin encounter, just a surprise. I had already come across a few 'clusters' or 'clumps' of coins at tot-lots, in sports fiends where folks rolls and tumble, and near some picnic sites ... and I had the same terrible performance. That was with the 6" DD on an Equinox 800 as well as the 5X8 DD on the Vanquish 540.coil.

All together I have owned 1 EQ-800 and 3 of the V-540 Pro Pack's. I liked some of what they did, for some hunting, but all of them are GONE! OregonGregg had a V-440 and then two V-540's, if I recall, and they have also been parted with. Did they work? Yes, sometimes on a lot of things, but OregonGregg duplicated Zinoln's encounter with the same three denomination coins from his pocket and had the same unimpressive results. On that same small cluster of three common coins we each had very good audio and informative VDI info from a White's M6, Nokta FORS CoRe and Relic and Racer 2 and Simplex +, and Garrett Apex w/4 different search coils, and better reports from my two non-display Tesoro models.

Yes, Minelab's are selling. Not necessarily "through the roof" but they are selling, but that's not all due to performance or features. It's due to their marketing.

you don't need a degree in economics to figure this out! to reiterate, they give guys what they want! multi-iq that helps ya where it counts!..in the field! ..I'm just sayin'

They give SOME people SOME of what they might be looking for, but for decades we have seen their marketing approach, often blended with some hype and misinformation, that has helped draw newcomers as well as some experienced detector users over to their product.

In the end, I don't care who makes it, where the parent company is, or if they are having them produced 'in-house' or through some location in Malaysia or elsewhere from their home country, there still isn't a perfect detector made. A lot of very good detectors, yes, but ALL of them will be missing a feature or two some people want, or they will fall a little short of some element of performance we anticipate. It's up to us to buy and use and learn what we feel fits our needs, but let's not get too carried away boasting about a manufacturer who has experienced a lot of issues through the years ... as well as today.

Since July of '83, I've never been without at least 2 favorite Tesoro models.
