Back to you Rich, and I kind-of agree.

I will say that the 800 is an exceptionally capable detector. I wouldn't say it was a good fit for you and your style of detecting at the time that you owned it. Heavy on ghost towns, light on parks, yards, urban areas.

Would it be a better fit for you now? I think so. Light on ghost towns, heavier on urban sites,
I think you might be right about the Equinox 800 and Vanquish 540 not being a good fit for ME in the ghost towns. The ORX w/5X9½ HF DD worked better, my FORS CoRe and FORS Relic worked better, and my Garrett Apex w/5X8 DD and Nokta Simplex + w/5X9½ DD work a lot better on my Nail,Board Performance Test and several other ferrous-object partial masking tests than those two Minelab's.

As for being a better fit for me today? It's possible. I do like the 6" DD coil for a lot of hunting, and it can do some of what I want for the places I'll mostly be hunting now which are urban Coin & Jewelry types of locations..

But, the detector interface still stands in the way; 8 modes / each with their own settings I don't think you would use.
I also agree with you there because I doubt that I would be using all of the adjustment modes / functions. What I have now works, and works rather well, so there isn't much out there that grabs my attention right now. I am interested in the coming SMF from Nokta / Makro and that's likely the only device that would interest me today.

Top that with a perpetual dislike of Minelab the company and we have a situation similar to a kid that intensely dislikes a particular vegetable. Doesn't matter how much butter and salt is added, for them, it will always be what it is.
Now, now. I would not say it is a "perpetual dislike" for Minelab, the company. I have owned several Sovereigns in the '90s, and early 2000's and a half-dozen Explorer II's, then the three Vanquish and the Equinox. I owned them, and liked what some of them did for some applications, but I had issues with the FBS models mainly due to my health and mobility. They were, for me, heavy and awkward and poorly balanced.

Also, I was dedicating 85% of my detecting time to out-of-the-way ghost towns with a lot of iron debris, or mainly hitting tot-lots in urban settings where a good Tesoro rules.

I first had a t Minelab GT-16000 back in the latter '80s to evaluate for 'electronic prospecting' performance and I liked a lot of what it offered at the time, especially compared with USA-made Nugget Hunting detectors. I guess it was the 'company' that has frustrated me the most with all of their bogus advertising through the years, especially with the BBS and FBS models, or when I was at a show, such as a GPAA event, and their 'Factory Reps' couldn't answer a lot of logical questions I had as well as others

I think that you're better off with your current group; Monte's keeper detectors - Your 2 favorite Tesoro's if things get tough, a couple Apex's for the general urban areas; coins, jewelry, relics if there are some tear outs. All are light in hand and balance well.
My 2 favorite Tesoro's, my Nokta FORS Relic and a Simplex +, plus four coil-equipped Garrett Apex devices. All work and work quite well so there really isn't much need or desire to go shop for something different.

As for Gregg cleaning out the closet of all things Minelab - I think he discovered that perhaps what he was using (CoRe, Racer, M6) were performing great. Why mess with success? Plus, he has many, many hours learning those detectors in the field that is foolish to throw away. Don't think he had more than a handful of hours on any of the Vanquish's. Pretty good deal for somebody else. New detector, used price.

Hope you had a great weekend.

No, he didn't have much time on the various Vanquish models he had, nor did I really. Yes, somebody out there got a very decent Vanquish or two for a very good price.

Since July of '83, I've never been without at least 2 favorite Tesoro models.
