You've had good advice from UtahRich, but I'll add this:

Black sand or other earthen material between a coil cover and coil can sometimes be an issue. I have found that, unless it is a significant amount, there is little issue to be concerned about.

More often the issues, be them constant or periodic, are related to the search coil and/or coil cable. I really enjoyed the MXT Pro, but I also used the smaller 6½" Concentric coil a good 90% of the time and for more open areas with fewer, more spaced targets I liked the open-frame 9" Concentric coil. I only used the 12" coil, like you are using, a few times for some evaluation purposes and one special search. I didn't like the weight, poor balance, and the fact that one of the 12" coils had an intermittent functioning issue.

I am also surprised you are using such a very low Gain setting with the MXT Pro. The design has several 'steps' as the Gain is increased that adjust not only the Sensitivity but also the Volume. Most of the time I hunted with the MXT Pro at the factory ▼ preset mark or higher.

The first thing I always do when I experience something like you describe it to change search coils. Check out a different coil or two and that will isolate the issue as either being coil related or not. I had very little problem with my MXT Pro's, and only one issue with a brand new, first-release 6000 Pro XL, and only two issues with the over 37 XLT's I owned. However, I did have a number of issues with various search coils from White's and either drove down and had them repaired or replaced. More search coils issues with White's than with all other detector manufacturers combined. So I would start out by trying a couple of different search coils to try and isolate the problem. Make sure you check the coil cable connector as well for a snug fit.
