Coins and such to about 3" or so, no plug needed.
I have used a 'slit' in the grass a good 90% of the time for forty-five years at least. Most urban sites I hunt with cons to 4" or even 5", a good screwdriver can work them up out of a 'slit-in-the-soil'. One handy tool many use, and now I can't find one, is Coin Popper. If anyone knows a source or if you have a spare or two to part with, let me know.
There are some interesting probes and narrow 'diggers' out there, and if the ground isn't brick-hard I would like to see KAC's Park Digger in action and do some comparisons.
