Re: A 'tool' that works is what we should use.

July 25, 2022 06:12PM
When I ordered my first metal detector, I asked for a coin probe (brass rod with a screwdriver handle) ... now this was from one of the major metal detecting sales companies ... they told me I didn't need one and they don't sell them, the hand digger and pin pointer was all I needed. I found one elsewhere. If I needed one or not wasn't a concern for them, as I wanted one. I hunted my own yard until I couldn't find where I retrieve a target standing right next to it, then I was ready to hunt elsewhere. ... I do not own a big shovel for detecting.
Even though the parks around me have no rules against detecting, I always ask permission and give them my name and a contact number. The grounds people and/or mayor's office in the towns around me, think of me when they think of metal detecting. ... they know me ... I have been blamed for many bad holes dug by someone else, but I also always fix those if possible. I was also kicked out of a park (which I had permission to detect), by the head grounds keeper. After talking with him for a bit, he was sorry because he had watched me repairing my diggings and really couldn't find where I had dug, once I was finished. But there were others who had gone onto the baseball diamond and left it a mess during the BB season, so instead of allowing me there and denying them access, it was easier to just say no one digs here. ... I agreed with him and apologized for the actions of those other detectorists.
I also had a guy tell me that it was easier to get kicked out of a place than ask permission to be there ... playing the "I didn't know you couldn't hunt here" card was better than not hunting the property ... this idea is becoming more popular as the Utube stars make finding things seem easy. ... and if he would sneak on to a property, he surely wouldn't care how he left it.

The hand-digger tool looks fine for a park.
