Monte,
I don't mind explaining why i choose the detector(s) that i do. I think I can express myself well enough here on your forum and compare thoughts and opinions with others that you can encourage
detector talk.
For me, the important key to remember is that many of us have (or had) focus on narrow / specialized areas of interest and equipment and techniques fine tuned to those areas. And we might project that our WAYS and EQUIPMENT directly transfer to all other areas of detecting.
Some 35 years ago or so, you and i stood in your living room talking about the benefits Tesoro detectors brought to the table and their ability to find coins in amongst the nails (beginning of the nail board test i suppose). At the time, I was focused on hunting the manicured lawns of old private yards. I was having a lot of success. Target ID and depth meters were key to minimizing my impact on the lawns of old folks kind enough to allow me to search them. You had taken great interesting in ghost towning what has become your favorite spot. Measuring the Tesoro against my needs at that time, i didn't believe it was a better option that what I was using. Doesn't mean that the Tesoro wasn't a good, great or even best choice for the ghost towns, it just means that as I looked at what it had to offer me for my yard hunting, i didn't see an added benefit.
Nothing was wrong with the Tesoro's - I just didn't believe they were the right tool for me with the way i was hunting old yards. But my Mark I and Whites Eagle weren't great choices as a tool for the ghost towns you were focusing on either.
Could I have underestimated what the Tesoro could offer me. Sure, that's a possibility. I reserve the right to learn and grow and even perhaps change my opinion on something. Looking back those 35 years or so though, I think I made the right decision in regards to yard hunting. (Perhaps I would have been wise to spend more time out in the ghost towns with you looking for coins and such 2 or 3 generations older than those i was finding in the old private yards). Regardless, Testing ideas and thoughts offered by others has helped me improve my skills and approaches to detecting. I believe i'm a better detectorist from associating with all of you. I think we can all pick up additional skills by sharing info with each other.
Wrapping up, my detector choices and decisions are based on what i think is a solid detecting background coupled with an interest to continually improve my detecting methods and skills. I have fun rubbing shoulders with many that frequent this forum and oft times I find the camaraderie with others the most enjoyable part of a detecting trip.
If folks want to question my choice(s) in a detector or technique, fine. What do you have to offer that is better than what I'm using / doing? Why is it better?
Let's talk. . . . .
