In two weeks I wrap up 58 years of detecting, and looking bac k I have had some detectors that had a glitch or two, but I have dealt with more search coil issues by far. And the worst of all the manufacturers was White's Electronics. Faulty connectors, shorts in the cables, some that repeated going bad after one, two or even three trips down to White's to have them checked out and serviced.
I was given a new coil to evaluate and it was bad, as well as the one they replaced it with. I never liked that coil much, even after I got a new detector and new coil. That one worked, sort of. I also had three brand new, in-the-box, detectors I picked-up at the factory that had a defective/dead coil right out of the box. Also a bad coil right off their display room array that was 'new'.
Other than them I did have one bad coil from Fisher, and a bad coil with broken ears, both of them, from Minelab with an Equinox 800.
As for aftermarket coils, I used to be sent some for an Explore II from Detech and only had one that worked but just a little 'off'. I did hear from a couple of people who had periodic issues with coils they used from NEL. I only had one coil NEL sent me that worked but the VDI read-outs were a bit jumpier and displayed numbers about 4 to 8 lower than any other coil. But no issues with cables, housing or strain-reliefs.
I hope you can get them resolved and working again.
