Took the Tejon to the park after repairing the connector and it performed excellent. Did a quick air test on a dime and was able to detect the dime to 12". When the machine was new it wasn't that deep so I suspect that the soldering on the wires wasn't that great when it was new.

Glad to hear it is working okay now. The "air test" results could have been associated with the soldering, or maybe you used a different search coil? That is if all the settings were the same, including Ground Balance.

This brings me to another thought. I always heard some machines ran Hotter than others of the same make and model. Curious if it was the coils that made them hot or not more so than the tuning of the machine?

I found this to b true with Tesoro's more than any other brand. As a dealer, I checked every detector I ordered in. Sometimes of a group of ten of the same model, I might note one or two that were little hotter or one or two that were a bit wimpier. If a better model was a bit hotter than mine, it became mine, and mine became a used-unit to sell.

By the way, I would use the same search coil to check out every detector so it wasn't a coil-related issue. I also used the same mineralized rock sample to make sure the GB was properly set, and I ALWAYS ran every Tesoro at minimum Disc.

Then, from time-to-time, I would have a customer's detector, especially a preset GB model, that was noisy or seemed to have impaired performance and be a little weaker. I would just check out several search coils of the same size and type until I found one that worked just a bit better. Then make sure the GB was properly set and they had a better unit. It was often a combination of a slightly 'off' coil, or a poorly-set GB, or both.
