.. quite a few who are very devoted to SMF's are because they have been using Minelab models for quite some time. Most are still solid fans of Minelab detectors while a few have tried other brands but then went back to Minelab.
Then there is another big group of hobbyists who haven't been into detecting very long, some started with a SF detector, but made a switch to a SMF. Some to a Deus II, some to an Apex, a few to a Legend, but most seem to have been drawn to the Minelab's. And with several small group discussions I have had the past nine or ten months, most of the people are not serious avid detectorists, but more casual or part-time hobbyists and many only associate SMF with Minelab and don't even know there are other choices out there. This is especially true of the Equinox series.
Most with an Equinox have never used a Selectable SF because they have heard / been told / read that working in a Multi-Frequency is always best and you get better depth and so on and so on.
Now, I have my Vanquish 540 Pro and I like what it can do in the right sites, but I also know some shortcomings and have a devoted liking for several SF detectors. And I have demonstrated strengths and weakness of both SMF and SF operation to others. I often am surprised at some of the facial expressions and comments others make when I demonstrate THEIR detectors and they find out how to adjust them better, use them better, and just how well they can perform.
While they, Minelab, have done some bad marketing for a long time, such as fooling people that the BBS units operated at 17 Frequencies and FBS at 28 Frequencies, or that the Equinox Multi-IQ introduction was going to make all SF detectors obsolete, then gave folks a 600 or 800 with Selectable SF's, they have done one thing.
It seems they have influenced common thinking that SMF is the only way to go and can do everything better. Again, not totally correct, but folks as a whole sure seem trapped in SMF thinking ... thanks mostly to Minelab.
That might be one reason I am pleased to see them introducing the new X-Terra Pro w/o an SMF function.

Also makes me satisfied to have my six or seven
(when I get Nokta serviced) other Single Frequency detectors to complement my SMF Vanquish 540.
Just some observations from small group gatherings and a lot of scrolling through Forum posts.
