IF you have a detector with a true, threshold-based All Metal mode, it is best to adjust for a proper slight Threshold hum, then adjust the Ground Balance.
Some detectors have a full-range adjustable Manual GB, while some rely on a automated GB that is preset .... often too high or positive. This is especially true in the motion-based Disc. mode. This can cause a detector to not detect or signal on some high-conductive targets.
You are always best served by having a proper, spot on GB if possible. Disc. mode can usually be set to accept most metals, ferrous and non-ferrous, but I have found most modern detectors lack a full-range GB adjustment. My Tesoro Bandido II microMAX does provide full range GB in the Disc. mode.
