In preparation for the WTHO, I'm looking for recommendations for nugget hunting.
What is the mineralisation condition of the soil in that area of Nevada?
Can I do just as well with a VLF, or are your chances greatly increased with a PI?
If so, what are your recomendations for PI machine that won't break the bank (i.e. GPZ-7000)
There is varied mineralization in the Rye Patch area, however I believe anyone will be able to do okay if they are using a detector and coil that they know and trust.
Personally, I will be doing my Nugget Hunting with one of my VLF detectors, and using a small to mid-size search coil. Most Gold Nuggets found in that are are small in size.
As for a PI, I would buy one IF I had the money and time to learn to master it. I would get the Garrett Axiom. If I were to buy a nugget-specific detector, it would be the Garrett 24K re-make of the White's detector. I would also consider the new Minelab X-Terra Pro a good unit to use for Gold Nugget Hunting, and my 19 kHz Nokta Relic or Fisher F-19 Ltd., are good tools, or I might grab a 14 kHz Racer or Racer II.
Tiny nuggets means hunting slowly and methodically, keeping the coil relatively close to the ground and overlapping a lot.
