Damn...I've been studying the top-end machines trying to decide on a purchase or two, hopefully in the near future (health permitting). Is minelab telling me that the manticore is five times the machine of the x-terra, the nox is four times the machine of the x-terra, or that I really don't need a top-end machine? Is selectable freq. really that much different than single freq.? Is the x-terra pro a step forward or a step backwards from what they have been saying for the past few years about single freq. being obsolete? Is it now proof (taking a few words from Nokta) that the tech is so close that it makes little difference?
Scott, it is the law of diminishing returns. There's NOT a 5x or 4x the results, there is a percentage of improved performance. Is a 10% or 8% or 5% improvement worth stepping up to the next model for you? Where do the benefits seen, for you, fall off with the increased technology that you're paying for?
Some of us don't need, or don't see the value in, all of that technology. I've never been one for using much discrimination or even notch features, which i had on my Teknetics Mark 1 way back in the mid-80's. I played with it a few times and then never used it again. Different story with my Equinox 800. As demonstrations were being made of how tones and conductivity scale segments could be adjusted to bring to my attention certain good targets in the trash, a little light went on. (just a little light). Notching with tones became a huge part of my daily detecting and made my time in the field more productive. I would find it hard to go back to previous knowing the benefits there are to be gained.
But for each of us, there is point where the technology available fails to be used, it isn't necessary for our own day to day, the cost exceeds the value. Or like for me, something is beyond my budget. If that point is at the X-Terra Pro, or the Vanquish, or the Equinox, or the Manticore. Well, I have a good series to select from, all of which seem to be quality selections for what they offer. Now to decide, what features are needed? Which are not?
Good luck,
