Find-of-the-Month used to have a loy of entries of old coins, especially silver, and there was a lot out there to be found. But as time passed there were fewer old coins, and far fewer who got out and found them to make entries. The same went for finding a nice Trade Token or really good Jewelry item.
Then club outings was another issue. Some were to often hunted places, and some to others, like a good ghost town that became a maneuverability issue for many.
And we can't forget about detector progress. Many read it as hype, and some was. But many also were shocked by the more expensive units and the confusion of all the adjustments possible and considering a purchase. In the long run, many just lost interest in the hobby.
Worse yet, in my opinion, there just wasn't enough new blood either.
