Harold,ILL.
I hate to once again sound like a grumphy old man shaking my first at the clouds but that one reason we are losing sites . . . . . . . . . .
Harold, I think we are slowly being squeezed out of existence, and it will continue.
I've been trying to expand my 'areas of interest' to give myself other areas to pursue my hobby. Ghost towning, shallow water hunting, and most recent, some prospecting.
If the newest generation of detectorists are idiots, we've nobody to blame but ourselves as the generation that raised them. My thoughts? Too many parents didn't want to be bothered raising their children so they left it for the rest of the world to do it. Well, here we are. Society was just waiting to grab hold of those unattended children and raise them 'their' way. And they did.
Don't like it? We can bitch and moan all we want as old men. It's too late. As for detecting, belonging to a dying hobby, we have to work harder and network better to find places to hunt. I don't see any indication of there being a roll back to the old days.
On a recent trip into town for other reasons, I tossed my new Manticore into the truck just in case the ground at a favorite old park might be thawed. I was hoping to do some deep coin hunting with the new detector. After my errand, I stopped at the park to see my favorite areas covered in a tent city of homeless people. There have been homeless folks hanging out at the parks for years, but nothing like this. Not sure if this situation will resolve when spring rolls around or not. I'm assuming NOT as that seems to be the way of things with local leaders. Sure there are rules against camping and staying overnight in the park. Obviously, they aren't being enforced.
Sucks for me as deep coin hunting at the parks was one of my favorite detecting activities and one of the reasons I choose to pick up a manticore. If this branch of detecting is now off my activities list, where do i turn? Well, i have a long list of options, but it is disappointing to have top-of-the-list stuff no longer available.
My other options have different detector needs so, what do i do now? I'll have to give it some long thought.
We can be aware of the reality of things but still keep a positive attitude and do the very best we can with what's available. For me, I'm turning to other opportunities. The new opportunities will be enjoyable, but different. So there i am. Adapt and survive.
