Hi Monte.
I also use a tumbler as well as separate the coins. However I use walnut shell as a medium in the tumbler and don't add anything else ... No water either.
I put about 1/3 coins in the drum and fill the rest with the crushed walnut shell I leave about a half in space from full ... It cleans the crude off and cushions the coins from too much direct contact.
I tried walnut shells and other media long ago, but it didn't work that well, especially on cruddy-looking coins, and took too long to do very little.

My Coin Cleaning process is to Sort Coins, then wash loose dirt from coins,, and that is followed by about a 1-2 minute 'pre-tumbling' treatment, then the coins are rinsed well. Then I portion some into a tumbler, add aquarium gravel to about ⅓ from the top. Just barely cover with water, add a squirt of Dawn liquid dish soap (not too much, just a squirt), then tumble for about 30 minutes, but no longer than 60 . Empty and separate from the gravel and rinse well, then spread the coins on a terry cloth bath towel to dry.
