V3i optimized test results

May 12, 2017 03:25AM
Hello Pablo,

Said i'd do some test and get back to you...and here they are.

I ran a number of test settings on the nail board, but focused on the salt program that has worked in the past. I used the standard nail board, and also tested across 4 items ($2.5 gold coin, Half dime, modern zinc penny and a quarter sized piece of old tin). I used the 5.3 bullseye coil and the 6x8 SEF. Spoiler alert - 5.3 was much more reliable. Was able to get 7 consistent hits and frequent enough hits on the 8th pass i was tempted to call it 8 for 8 with the half dime. The other targets were 8/8, including the quarter sized tin that wants to look like a coin...unfortunately...and i think you'll find it would fool most if not all machines set to pick up a coin on the nail board. The 6x8 SEF wanted to hit on the nail heads as good targets with the following setting and by the time you null out the nails, you start missing the targets (i did not try to customize the program specific to the SEF, so it may be that i could have come up with a workable program).

I've taken the salt program and made the following key changes.
- Found using the 12 Hz band pass filter to be most reliable with the coil and swing speed.
- Accept all targets -30 and up (the nails pull down a small coin like a half dime to the -20s in many passes. also true of the gold coin). The nails are still nulled out.
- Set recovery to 50. You can go lower, as it just starts making the target response more abbreviated and didn't suit my ear...but i found going much higher started causing misses. Need to keep the recovery short enough to work past the nails.
- set SAT at 30 which seemed to be about optimal.
- gain at 8; found going higher started causing some falses and going down to around 4 started losing depth in air testing over the nails. Didn't mess with 6 or 7 which may have been fine.
- Don't use bottlecap rejection as it causes misses. Thought it might null out the tin, but to no avail.

Here is the other news. I also ran the MX Sport through the same tests and hit reliably at 8/8 with the 7" coil on all targets. Also used the salt program and the key adjustment, of which there aren't many, was a gain of 4 or 5. Nothing else....just 'nailed' it. Frankly, it surprised me!

Since you don't have the same coil, you likely won't get the same results, but it may give you enough to go on to get close.

Happy hunting,
Zincoln
