'slingshot,' the MX5 is, in my opinion, one of the

better detectors White's has produced in quite a while.

As all 'All Purpose' detector, I consider the MXT Pro / All-Pro and MX5 to be very good and the best from White's. I have seen one or two things in performance that makes me kind of interested in the new MX Sport, but it would have to prove itself to me to like it s much as I do the MXT Pro and MX5.

I am one who complained about the rush job to market the MX5 before it was all checked out or all options considered, and the mail consideration was not including a 'track lock' on it. Can the MX5 work well? Yes, it does in many applications and there have only been a few times, in the very iron littered sites I used it where nails and ferrous junk was very dense and closely positions, that I had some issues with the constant auto-tracking. Not always, just occasionally.

For Coin Hunting and general Relic Hunting the MX5 was a detector I preferred, actually, to all other White's models, including the MXT Pro. I preferred the balance and the quick-to-adjust Discrimination and mode select. I hunted almost exclusively with mine rejecting the first 3 prompts in 2-Tone mode. Even today, if I were to select only one White's detector for my personal arsenal or as a recommend for a hobbyist, it would be the MX5 w/standard 9" Concentric coil, and the one I used the most, the 6½" Concentric coil, that stayed on my MX5 most of the time. Worked very well in the iron littered short towns I hunt, and better than most other detectors from other makers at the time.

I wish it was a model White's promoted more and kept strongly in their line-up. I am not sure what it is you think you are 'missing' because the MX5 is a very good detector. We all need to sort through what's out there and settle in on and using what we are comfortable with.
