Monte's 'Regular-Use Detector Team' and assignments.

Most of my time is spent Relic Hunting and as secondary I do some urban Coin Hunting. Because I hunt in dense trash most of the time, and a bulk of that is nails to other scrap iron to rusty tin. I favor smaller-size search coils 85-90% of the time.

When Coin Hunting playgrounds with woodchip, sand, pea gravel, etc., I most often use my Tesoro Mojave w/7" Concentric coil or Vaquero w/6" Concentric coil. When I get into larger, open areas, like parks or sports fields I will often grab my White's XLT. For 'average' Coin Hunting areas I stick with a smaller-size search coil to a mid-sized search coil, and those could be any of the following, and this is a rough order or preference:

Nokta Core w/'OOR' DD or the open-frame 5X9½ DD
Makro Racer 2 w/7" Concentric.
White's MX-7 w/6½" Concentric
White's MX-7 w/7" DD
Nokta Relic w/5X9½ DD
Nokta Impact w/7" Concentric

In urban Coin Hunting areas where I encounter more modern trash I generally grab them as follows:

Makro Racer 2 w/'OOR' DD
White's MX-7 w/6½" Concentric

For Relic Hunting in dense contamination, especially iron debris, I select the following for a worst environment, followed by those I use in moderately littered sites:

Nokta CoRe w/'OOR' DD
Nokta Relic w/5" DD
Makro Racer w/'OOR' DD
White's MX-7 w/6½" Concentric
Nokta Impact w/5" DD

Nokta CoRe w/5X9½ DD
Nokta Relic w/5X9½ DD
Makro Racer 2 w/7" Concentric
White's MX-7 w/7" DD
Nokta Impact w/7" Concentric

As I mentioned above, these orders of preference are just close-to-preferred because there are times and places where I just 'feel' more comfortable with one set-up over the others. The fact is, ALL of the detectors and coils in my arsenal are very reliable performers for me in the terribly challenging sites I like to hunt.

What about bigger coils, you might ask, such as the 950 on the MX-7 or the 7X11 DD coils on all the Nokta and Makro models as 'standard' size coils? Well, I very seldom use anything larger than the mid-sized coils. When I do opt for one, I naturally use the 950 on an MX-7, but for the absolute best prolonged-search comfort I mount a 7X11 DD on either the Nokta CoRe or Nokta Relic. Better all-around balance than those coil sizes on the Racer 2 or Impact models.
