Re: Interesting array of units .. Learning ... and Habits.

Monte says "I'm sure many readers are curious what others think about the newer models compared with existing reliable detectors."

I've owned the Whites Eagle, DFX, XLT, MXT, Etrac, and Deus. Since I have multiple hobbies, I didn't get out regularly with any of them. So I had to learn how to use them every time! The Eagle was the worst - Menu, submenu and submenu under the submenu :-( I eventually went back to the good ole MXT. One glance, and you know how it is setup, and you can change the few settings there are on the fly. The MXT is still nearly as good as any machine out there and also general purpose. I could have been happy with it for the rest of my life.

However, like in ham radio, ya gotta have a new rig to play with now and again. :-) I recently acquired a Nokta Impact, and an Equinox 600. Trying to learn both at the same time is a frustrating experience, fer sure. I keep mixing up the features in my head.

I know you like "simple", Monte. I do too, but it appears those days are over. With uP controlled everything, it is just too tempting to add a zillion settings to new equipment - if for no other reason than marketing. After all, as Steve H. says, there hasn't been any real progress in depth and there won't be until there's a new patent. A lot of people like to "cherry pick" sites, so they want all kinds of discrimination and audio options. This adds complexity.

The latest buzzword on the forums is "speed is the new depth". Lots of truth to that. The old analog machines were fast. Then they started adding processors to the units - with slow processors. This killed the "unmasking" of targets. I think that is one of the reasons Tesoro is still doing so well with their simple no-screen units. The latest higher end detectors are using fast processors now, so one can have their cake and eat it too. Target unmasking, along with all the other bells and whistles. I think it comes down to which unit is most intuitive for YOU.

I suspect (can't tell until I get a smaller coil), I'll be keeping the EQ and MXT for general hunting. The impact is a nice machine, however I think there is an advantage to multiple frequencies (salt water/mineralized beaches) and it is waterproof. It also will pair with a variety of bluetooth headphones. Since I have a Whites GMT (48KHz, I seem to recall) I will eventually trade it and the EQ600 in for an EQ800. Then all the detecting bases are covered!

Yes, but remember Rich(Utah) that you're going to have another new-to-you detector in a week or so.
