This method is almost invisible, and an added bonus is that the raccoons and skunks do not dig up a plug looking for whatever you might have hidden in the hole. I use this a lot if a target is below probe recovery range, but not 6 or more inches down. I locate the target with my probe first, cut a slit and open the sides with my fingers to allow me to insert my knife. Then I remove soil with my hori hori knife, placing it on my drop cloth, until I get the prize, whatever it might be. Then push and compact, all the soil back into the opening, close up the sides with my fingers. Usually I cannot see that the ground has been disturbed after completing the clean up.
